Its OK if What You Think Makes You Happy Doesnt - The Muse

Its OK if What You Think Makes You Happy Doesnt - The Muse Its OK if What You Think Makes You Happy Doesnt I simply don't have a clue what's up with me, my companion stated, apprehensively destroying the beverage coat that accompanied her paper cup while we sat at the corner table in one of our preferred neighborhood bistros. We had consented to meet for an hour or two so she could vent about different things that were worrying her. She was a ways into her second year as a social specialist a position she'd buckled down for. After her student, a graduate degree, and endless entry level positions, she was at long last working in the field that she had imagined about since she could recollect. I have precisely what I needed, she stated, conveniently sorting out the cardboard shreds she had heaped on the table, All in all, for what reason do I despite everything feel this agitated? Is it accurate to say that i should be more joyful at this point? I murmured and disclosed to her that I knew precisely how she felt. Truly, it was a circumstance I ended up in a bigger number of times than I wanted to check. Furthermore, guess what? I'm willing to wager that you've been there now and again too. Maybe that is the reason one specific statement from an ongoing meeting that writer, Gretchen Rubin, did with Alison Green, who runs the famous Ask a Manager site, stood apart to me so much: Once in a while the things that satisfy us aren't the things that we wish fulfilled us whether it's a specific sentimental accomplice or the books we like to peruse or a particular vocation track. That is so evident, right? It's so natural to develop these thoughts of what ought to bring us happiness dependent on the notoriety we need to develop or the picture we need to present to the remainder of the world. In any case, here's the risk in that: You frequently wind up cherishing the thought far more than the truth. When you in the end find that specific thing doesn't in reality light a fire within you as you had initially envisioned? Indeed, there's regularly a strong measure of disgrace that accompanies that-a feeling of disappointment, in spite of the way that you're quitting any trace of something you never truly appreciated at any rate (truly, simply get some information about the time I attempted to persuade myself that I love running). What's more, that was actually where my companion got herself: After contributing huge amounts of time, vitality, and assets into her training, she thought her profession way was sincerely burdening and nothing like she envisioned. Furthermore, that disclosure left her inclination troubled with blame and disarray. I wish I had Green's recommendation to impart to her at that point, since I see her message as especially reassuring. Not exclusively are you permitted to attempt things and afterward discover that you don't encounter the feeling of satisfaction or energy you were seeking after, but at the same time you're generally permitted to drop them like hot potatoes when you arrive at that resolution. Much further, turning out to be mindful that something doesn't bring you joy isn't only a chance to relinquish those things that don't fulfill you, yet in addition to discover the things that really do. I've attempted to truly organize making sense of what brings me satisfaction regardless of whether they're things that aren't totally lined up with the mental self view I need to have-and afterward attempt to mastermind my life in like manner, Green proceeds in the meeting. In this way, in the event that you've at present ended up stuck in a comparable circumstance as my companion and feel like you've been tricked by the real world, take Green's consolation and gone for it. Keep in mind, while we as a whole need to do things that aren't thoroughly euphoria commendable once in a while (heartbroken!), life's too short to even think about filling your days with stuff that just cuts you down. You have my consent: Let go of that inclination to pummel yourself and rather direct your concentration toward making sense of what really will present to you the degree of eagerness and fulfillment that you realize you merit. Trust me, that is definitely more gainful than the other option.

GiftRapper Jay Kilichand

Grown-Up Gigs Rapper/GiftRapper Jay Kilichand At the point when I read about Jay Kila in New York magazine and his organization, GiftRapped which offers redid raps, and a music video to go with it! I bopped directly over to the site (what? I bop!) and spent the following half-hour observing all of his samples. They carried the greatest grin to my face (particularly the Bar Mitzvah one humorousness!), and I realized you folks would adore him the same amount of as I did. Appreciate! 1. What did you wanna be the point at which you grew up? At the point when I was more youthful I generally thought I needed to be a venture broker and go into finance. This is fundamentally what each child from NYC that goes to tuition based school needs to be, on the grounds that its what everybody in NYC does. As a child you get presented to the unrestrained ways of life related with banking employments and its hard not to need that for yourself. It wasnt until school that I understood my inspiration to do back was simply to bring in cash, so I began searching for things I really appreciated doing that I might make a vocation from. I had consistently been into hip-jump and rap and my lesser year I got a MacBook which made it extremely simple to record tunes utilizing Garageband. From there I simply continued doing it as a side interest and it was just the past couple years that I began quitting any and all funny business about rap as a profession. 2. The idea driving GiftRapped just knocks my socks off. How the hell did you at any point think of it? So me and my accomplice Dan were both working at a new business in Silicon Valley which was a site that let you request redid tunes (without video). The originators didnt need to invest any more energy into the business, wouldn't sell it, thus the organization fizzled and I moved back home to New York. Dan reached me the previous summer saying he needed to relaunch the site. I was reluctant until my auntie requested that I make a melody about her better half for his birthday and to put pictures over the music as a video slide-appear (this is the Lenny video on our homepage). She paid me for this and that is the point at which I called Dan and said Lets do it. 3. What did/do you say to the haters (either the voice in your own head, or the voice that originates from others) who let you know GiftRapped would never bring in any cash? Get Gifted! Hahah. There truly arent TOO numerous haters of GiftRapped, or perhaps we just havent experienced them a great many people really love the thought when they first find out about it. In quite a while of haters, I generally feel that individuals who state I cannot accomplish something make me need to do it all the more just to demonstrate them wrong. With GiftRapped so far weve had some achievement, however weve just begun making it the organization we need it to be. We despite everything have far to go, so I wont state anything and will let our activities represent us. 4. Do ya see their requirements as a harmony between the time you give GiftRapped and the time you commit to your own music ventures? Truly, definitely. I attempt to adjust the two decently well since I figure that advancing myself as a craftsman thus helps GiftRapped and the other way around. I additionally consistently make a point to offer 100% to both GiftRapped melodies and my own music, in spite of the fact that Ive found that there is to some degree a distinction in attitude as far as composing each sort of tune; if Im in a GiftRap outlook it very well may be more enthusiastically to compose a standard tune thus I may need to hold up a day or two to do as such. 5. If you could have your current self offer your pre-GiftRapped self one bit of guidance, what might it be? Continue onward. Dont burn through so much time pondering stuff; do what needs to be done. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Im givin away a duplicate of The Spark Kit ($150value), and it can go to you!

From recycling to driving hybrid or electric cars, we find ways to make our lives more environmentally friendly. But that’s at home. What about in our businesses? Chances are even if you make an effort to incorporate environmental sustainability in your personal life, it might not be part of your professional life. A 2015 survey from Cox Conserves found that while 62 percent of business decision makers make green choices at home, only 45 percent do at the office. Click To Tweet Social reputation We all know how much a company’s name can be tarnished when it’s revealed that they pollute heavily or make irresponsible social choices. Luckily, however, when a company focuses on environmental sustainability it improves their reputation. People relate to and appreciate their efforts and are more likely to support the company. Here are some small, but important initiatives you can start: Recycling Chances are, you’ve got a recycling bin for paper or aluminum cans in your office somewhere. But there are always more opportunities to recycle your resources. A big one that many companies don’t think of is electronics. In most cases most computers, phones, and printers can be recycled, which makes a big environmental impact. Going paperless Think about all the files, invoices, and documents it takes to run a business. If you haven’t yet gone paperless with the majority of things, that’s a lot of wasted trees. And in this day and age of cloud storage there’s really no reason why you can’t make everything from your billing to your payroll paperless. Energy efficient equipment There are very few pieces of equipment that don’t have a more energy efficient option. Whether it’s the light bulbs you use or the old microwave in the break room, there are a hundred things you could replace with newer models that use less electricity. For bigger pieces of equipment, the government sometimes offers subsidies for the purchase so do research on those requirements to find out more information. But Wait! The Mind-Blowing Follow-Up

In any case, Wait! The Mind-Blowing Follow-Up I am Learning by Warrior Girl, Youre a Warrior Mama Now At the point when I had my first month to month Business Building Day on Dec 1 posted the (staggering!) results here, I got some amazeballs remarks that gave me loads of something worth mulling over. It likewise gave me a great deal of however pause! minutes, as in But pause! I despite everything need to state X, Y as well as Z! or on the other hand But pause! Theres a touch of BS here, as well! Along these lines, I simply needed to catch up that post with this one. Thus, ensure you go there first and read it before proceeding. Dont stress. Sick be here when you get back. Im tolerant (albeit just when Im in the PC. Face to face, not really). To begin with, I hafta call horse crap on myself. It was pleasant that no one called horse crap on me, however that doesnt make it OK to not call it by any means. Furthermore, the piece I felt was BSing you? The way that I guaranteed I wasnt online to showcase myself. Indeed, the facts demonstrate that Im here to assemble connections and discover my clan and interface and give assets the entirety of that, truly, truly, yes and yes. Be that as it may, what do I say to individuals that ask me for what valid reason Im on twitter, and what the utilization is of them to be on twitter? My reaction, If youre not a private company hoping to showcase yourself, well, theres actually no integral motivation to be on twitter. That is to say, indeed, you can get the news that path participate on discussions about your preferred show meet similarly invested individuals, yet truly, would I be on twitter in the event that I wasnt a solopreneur searching for inexpensively/showcasing? Most likely not . Would I be here, blogging, on the off chance that I wasnt hoping to assemble my foundation (an expression my abstract operator utilized Ive become somewhat fixated on), build up myself as a specialist, and develop my business? Most likely not. Be that as it may, while I arrived in light of the fact that I required a (modest!) approach to advertise myself (from my desk area, initially!), I stay since its fun, and I love the individuals Ive met, and I think its amazeballs to feel like Im helping individuals with my posts and my tweets and whatever else Im putting out into the world. Which carries me to You need to really showcase yourself on these stages. In the event that youre hoping to fabricate your business, its insufficient to manufacture connections and discover your clan and associate and give assets you need to tell individuals what you bring to the table. I cannot disclose to you how often Ive had a discussion with somebody that stated, Well, Ive been on twitter for a long time and tweet consistently 5 days every week, except Ive never made a deal/gotten a customer/had anybody get some information about my administrations/items! Furthermore, how would you have 4,500 devotees when I have 87? I generally get some information about their business, and that is the point at which I get the vague look. I dont wanna be a vile spammer! or on the other hand I dont wanna trouble my devotees! or on the other hand I dont wanna irritate individuals by just posting about my business! is the thing that I receive consequently. Furthermore, I concur with every one of those things: I dont wanna be a vile spammer, trouble my devotees, or irritate individuals by just tweeting about my business, either. Be that as it may, my god (wo)man, you need to tell individuals what youre doing! That is the entire freakin purpose of Twitter! Furthermore, in the event that you tweet twelve times each day, at that point how is tweeting on more than one occasion about your business being a disgusting spammer? Indeed, theres completely an equalization nothings more terrible than looking at a profile and just observing blogged: Your Mom Smells and blogged: Your Mom Still Smells and New item: Perfume for Your Mom. Same goes for your blog, if each and every post discusses another item you recorded or another help youre offering. In any case, truly do you think youre going to transform into that?! That is to say, truly?! Truly?! Most likely not so much. Everyone whos voiced that worry to me is sweet exquisite couldnt be a disgusting spammer on the off chance that they attempted! On the off chance that they attempted! In the event that you cannot believe that Im discussing you, at that point simply work the math 4 non-limited time tweets for each special tweet. Done and done. For what its value, when I have another blog entry, I plan it to be tweeted two times every day: once around lunch and once after supper. In the event that I wanna advance something different, Ill ensure I just have 3 limited time tweets/day so I dont feel like a disgusting spammer. Yet, genuinely, on the off chance that you dont open your mouth and explain to your tweeples why youre there, how would you anticipate that them should know? What's more, um, in the event that they dont wanna hear it, theyll leave. And afterward you realize that theyre not your kin. Its an incredible gatekeeping strategy. Furthermore, trust me you wanna be a guardian. You gotta appear and go about as a member. That is likewise the line between disgusting spammer cool patron. At the point when you appear, youre adding to the discussion, not draining the life out of it or returning it on you and what you wanna shout at everybody. The first occasion when I took Blogging Your Way, I was totally there as a member, and in light of the fact that I accomplished the work and was there consistently, I made extremely solid bonds. Like, these-members are-as yet staying in contact with-me after two years and-joining to-work-with-me solid. The second time I took it? All things considered, I was there to advertise myself, principally, with optional accentuation on the substance of the course. Um, that completely worked less well. I went ahead solid the principal week, remarking and writing in the discussions and, um, shouting about my stuff, yet after that first week I dropped off. I didnt have the opportunity or the inspiration, truly, to go on the site partake . I wound up making up for lost time with 2+ long stretches of substance in the most recent week, and by then it was past the point. The exercise? Except if Im extremely, really a member in the e-courses I take, its not going to be such an extraordinary promoting apparatus all things considered. No one loves a yeller. Ya gotta see selling/promoting decidedly. I know, I know, that disgusting spammer or tricky salesman keeps coming up! I hear this from my customers constantly, as well: I wanna sell myself my business yet I dont wanna be yucky about it! All things considered, I would rather not say it, yet The Ickiness begins with you! In the event that you consider deals to be promoting as yucky, at that point it will be disgusting. No buts about it. So why not think of another word for selling as well as showcasing that would i say i is, dont know, possibly somewhat fun? Something you can anticipate? I utilize the word pimping in light of the fact that it generally makes me chuckle I gotta pimp my e-course today! It removes all the foul dangerous in light of the fact that its simply, well, silly. I know somebody who utilized the word invite, while a customer of mine concocted ballyhoo. Discover your statement thatll make ya anticipate spreading your magnificence over the land such that makes ya glad . I swear, its conceivable. Dont be a numbskull with your cash. Truly. Take out the blog promotions you can bear (some are super expensive!). Dont toss $50/day at Facebook promotions. At whatever point conceivable, spend a tad to consider making the plunge and afterward track how that promoting stream is functioning for you. For instance, I as of late purchased a 3-month advertisement on an extraordinary blog with the goal that I could offer a giveaway there. While this promotion has given me a great deal of traffic to my site, the peeps that get to my landing page leave 10 seconds after the fact. 10 seconds! By and large, new peeps spend around 2 and a half minutes on my site. Clearly, while I appreciate this blog despite everything feel like this was a wise venture (its simple to like going through your cash when you know youre supporting something you trust in!), this advertisement didnt truly work for me since, well, I surmise theyre just not my peeps! In any case, Im happy that I gave it some an ideal oppo rtunity to perceive how it would function before choosing if I needed to reestablish. Promoting publicizing sets aside some effort to get results, so dont markdown anything too soon. In conclusion, and I referenced this in Tough (Question) Tuesday this week, being authentic is along these lines, so key. Ive been getting that word a ton of sufficiently late to take note. Your advertising works in light of the fact that youre so certified. You composed something like that other blogger, however your rendition sat better with me it was so certified. What's more, truly, I concur! I am certified! Im simply this verbose and energetic and fair and uproarious, all things considered, for better or for more terrible ?? However, my god (wo)man, dont attempt to copy my genuineosity. Set aside the effort to comprehend what makes you veritable and special (this and this are acceptable beginnings), and afterward simply trust me that its enough. It completely is. In the event that you feel that my certifiable is better than your authentic, I will so give you a knuckle sandwich. What's more, that is certifiably not a decent sandwich to swallow. I trust my But Wait!s make you think of your very own portion. Be that as it may, dont stand by to incorporate them! Remember its every one of the a major analysis, so have a great time combining that elixir and seeing what transforms into a sovereign and what just blasts into flares. I have an inclination Ill despite everything be exploring different avenues regarding my showcasing great into my vocation, and on the off chance that I stop, Im completely accomplishing something incorrectly. So take a full breath and make a plunge! Youll most likely locate some shrouded treasures. Alright, all analogies are finished. What are you despite everything doing here? Get goin!

Pursue again in the event that you have toIf you're disclosed to you will recover a call however you don't hear following a week or thereabouts, call again. There might be a huge number of explanations behind the postponement. Maybe the activity detail for the job changed, or an inward competitor wound up being the favored up-and-comer, or the job was pulled back, or somebody was de bilitated or was travelling.9. If you can't overcome, attempt again later. If they reveal to you it's the stopping point for you for this job, presently you can center your vitality elsewhere. At all occasions guarantee that your abilities and experience are applicable to the job you are focusing on. See whether you're a solid match for the organization culture and comprehend what their agony focuses are by leading intensive research, conversing with your industry system to pick up counsel and direction about the organization, and, if conceivable, increase a referral in to the organization from somebody who can make a positive buzz about you. There is certainly not an enchantment equation t hat will work each time I'm sorry to say. 5 Ways to Build the Worlds Greatest Workplace

5 Ways to Build the Worlds Greatest Workplace In 2002 Vishen Lakhiani operated his small business, Mindvalley out of a bedroom in Time Square. It was a shady little apartment that previously had been a Thai massage parlor.   Later that year, due to visa problems he was forced to head back to his home town of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. But this lent itself to some problems.   First, all of Vishens clients, partners, and vendors were US based.   Second, Malaysia has a massive brain drain problem.   Every year 1% of the educated population leaves for the developed world to find jobs.   In 2007, 140,000 of Malaysias smartest minds left the country. In 2008-09 that number rose to 305,000.   So how was Vishen going to be able to convince talent to work for him, when the smartest people were leaving constantly? Buckminster Fuller once said, You never change things by fighting existing reality.   To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. So Vishen set a goal to make the worlds greatest workplace.   By creating a workplace in Malaysia where people wanted to work, he could essentially make the existing model in Kuala Lumpur obsolete. Today Mindvalley is recognized by INC, WorldBlu, and several other sites for their innovative workplace and culture. And theres plenty of evidence that employees are feeling the same way as well.   If you search on Youtube for Mindvalley Applications youll find over 1400 videos of people competing for Mindvalley jobs.   To give you a scope of the people applying, Mindvalley employees from 31 countries all work in one office as a result of their mission to create the worlds greatest workplace. How they got there and what they practice will amaze you. 5 Ways to Build The Worlds Greatest Workplace Vishen found there are five pillars to running a world famous workplace. 1.   Foster Happiness When you blend the lines of work and play, employees will find a way to make their work productive. Vishen Lakhiani The first thing they wanted to do was to give their employees a beautiful environment to work in.   Vishen believed, if you created a place that was more appealing than the other places your employees go to hang out, theyll end up wanting to stay at work more. The second thing Vishen implemented was Flexitime.   At Mindvalley, they dont care if you take off a Monday to see a movie then come back on Sunday to make up the work.   As long as the work gets done theyre happy. Because Mindvalley attracts talent from all around the world, Vishen wants to make sure he fosters an environment where his employees can have social experiences. So he flies them to paradise islands, hosts parties, and runs events.   His ultimate goal is to make the employees friends, because its a lot easier to come into work each day if you know youll have a friend there with you. Typical companies hold weekly meetings.   Instead of doing the routine of updates and progress charts seen in most of these meetings, Mindvalley instituted something called The Awesomeness Report. Here they talk about their key accomplishments for the week but they share it in a way thats similar to a stand up comedy act.   They describe it as watching The Daily Show. Another way they build happiness into the company is by making the work place more democratic.   One way they do this is through a process called Ask.   Here questions are submitted anonymously to the management for them to publicly answer. 2.   Create a Noble Mission Mindvalley is a publisher of Personal Growth products.   They currently have around 1 million subscribers reading their content, but their goal is to touch 500 million lives. Having this kind of impact on such a large audience is what keeps Mindvalleys employees engaged. 3. Epic Quests This part of the formula borrows ideas from the computer game industry.   Game designers understand what it takes to keep gamers interested in their products.   Quests are the equivalent of your day to day work task, only in games, you actually want to complete them. One of the concepts Mindvalley applies to the work are Badges for your desk. So for example, if you are recognized for your ability to get work done quickly, they throw The Flash on your desk.   Everyone in the office sees it and knows youre a speedy worker. Mindvalley also levels up their employees through other methods.   One example is their Bell of Awesomeness.   When you do something truly remarkable your managers or employees can nominate you for the Bell of Awesomeness.   This gets rung maybe once or twice in an employees career so when it happens everyone pays attention. Another gamification element they apply are Community Voted Leader Boards.   These help employees know whos doing things well and who to get help from if you are looking for ways to improve. What happens when you are nominated as a top performer?   You get to Mount the Puppy.   Here you sit on a plastic puppy in front of your peers as they shower you with praise about why you were nominated as a top performer in the company. When you finished all a game has to offer sometimes its the little hidden things that make all the difference in keeping you interested.   At Mindvalley, they implement the Easter Egg idea by having a secret committee plan a surprise event, gift, or party twice a month. For example, you might come in one day and find the company has brought Starbucks in for all their employees, another month you might find the cool tech gadget your department was interested in trying out.   You never know whats in store for the day and it keeps you interested in your workplace. 4. Personal Growth When you do the same thing over and over again you start to stagnate. So, to make personal growth a part of their work, Mindvalley has the 45/5 rule.   What this means is employees will typically work 45 hours a week, but for 5 of those hours they are required to invest in themselves.   As a result, Mindvalley offers an unlimited budget for Amazon books.   Employees are encouraged to pick any book they feel can help them further their career or life and to go ahead and read it on the companys time. Mindvalley even went as far as to make an auditorium called the Hall of Awesomeness where guest coaches and speakers are flown in to help grow and educate the Mindvalley team. Perhaps Mindvalleys proudest mark of personal growth is their Dream Manager.   Here they keep a bulletin board with three things about each of their employees.   First, what are the experiences or objects you want to attain in your lifetime?   Second, how they want to grow?   It could be public speaking, learning to cook like a chef, or learn a new language.   Third, what do you want to contribute to the world? These then become a goal of the company to make a reality in their employees lives. 5.   Tribal Dynamics Mindvalley has their own version of the Holstee Manifesto.   They call it their Code of Awesomeness. The employees helped come up with it and it embodies how the company works.   In addition to their code, Mindvalley also has their own language.   For example, often theyll refer to someones work as Awe-gasmic, which means the work was so impressive it sent shivers up their spine. But the Mindvalley tribe doesnt stop there.   They extend their tribe dynamics to their customers by having an open office where people are welcome to visit.   They host their own festival called Awesomefest where their customers come together to learn about personal growth and bond with the Mindvalley team. By doing this, they help blur the borders between company and customers. The last part of Mindvalleys tribal dynamics comes from their Mindvalley Insights.   Here they make the Mindvalley principles involved in their marketing, management, and culture available for free to anyone interested in learning. Why Does This Work? Looking back at these five principles youll see interesting models that tie many of these pieces together. Happiness Noble Mission Epic Quests Personal Growth Tribal Dynamics First,   Happiness + A Noble Mission = Flow.   Think on the times youve been happy in your work and its attached to something grand.   How did you feel?   Did work just seem to fly?   Did everything just seem to flow? Second, Tony Robbins said there are two great spiritual needs people have.   Contribution and growth.   When you apply a noble mission and personal growth to your workplace, youre doing just that. And finally, Dave Logan has something called a Level 4 Tribe, which is a pinnacle companies try to achieve.   If you study it, youll see that Happiness + A Noble Mission + Tribal Dynamics = A Level 4 Tribe. Whats the Impact? Research clearly shows multiple benefits from several of these principles on their own, let alone when they are combined.   Loyalty, innovation, hard work, fulfillment, and revenue growth are just a few. But Vishen is most proud of the impact it has on the individuals.   He sees around 25% of his employees go on to become entrepreneurs after working at Mindvalley for longer than two years.   Thats powerful. You can see Vishens Ted Talk where he talks about their unique approach to the workplace below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHLm5Lne3D0#t=276 Your Turn Workplaces have come a long way since our grand parents generation.   Many of them are much more employee friendly than they used to be. What I shared here are just five of the things workplaces can do to make them the worlds greatest workplace.   But what say you? Do one thing for me please.   Share in the comments below what you think it takes to be the worlds greatest workplace. Ive also started a Reddit thread asking this same question there.   Feel free to check it out here.

How To Answer How Did You Hear About This Position - Career Sidekick

How To Answer How Did You Hear About This Position - Career Sidekick How To Answer How Did You Hear About This Position? Interview Questions and Answers / https://www.edenscott.com/blog Employers love asking interview questions like, how did you hear about us? or, how did you hear about the position? And theyre looking for a few specific things in your answer! If youre not prepared to explain how you heard about this job, it can start your interview off poorly and possibly cost you the job offer (first impressions count for a lot, and employers often ask this VERY early). So in this article, Im going to walk you through how to answer, how did you hear about us? with sample answers, dos and donts, and more.Lets get startedWhy Employers Ask How Did You Hear About the Position?Employers ask this question for a few reasons.First, they honestly want to know. Theyre curious. You see, employers post jobs in many different places, and if they find a candidate they like (you), theyre curious how you found them. For example, maybe they posted their position on two job boards, and also created a YouTube video about their hiring needs. They want to kn ow which of their efforts are most effective, so theyll often begin an initial phone interview by asking a question like, how did you hear about this job?Theres one more reason they ask, too And this is where you can make a mistake if youre not carefulTheyre asking you how you heard about them because they want to hire someone whos being targeted and specific in their job hunt. Employers want to hire someone who knows what they want. They dont want someone who will accept any job they can get. Theyd much rather get someone whos excited for THEIR specific job because they think that person will be more motivated, more energetic, etc. This is also why employers ask questions like, Why did you apply for this job? why do you want this job? and, what do you know about our company? So you need to make sure your answer shows that you have intent and purpose in your job search, and you didnt just stumble onto their job randomly, along with 1,000 other jobs youve applied for.Because if you soun d like that, you arent going to a job offer from top companies. (FYI- if you want more help knowing why companies reject people, we have an in-depth article on 16 reasons you cant find a job).Answering How Did You Hear About Us? 10 Sample AnswersIn most cases, its perfectly fine to tell the truth when you explain how you heard about their job. If ANY of these reasons are true, you can simply tell the truth in the interview:You were looking actively for jobs and found it on a job board, careers website, while searching jobs on LinkedIn, etc., and thats how you first saw their jobYou have a colleague or friend in the company who suggested you apply or mentioned they were hiringYou have a colleague or friend who doesnt work in the company right now, but heard they were hiring and suggested you applyYou read an article, press release, or other news source saying they were hiringYou read an article or other news source that made you interested in the company in general, so you decided t o look for job openings with themYou were contacted by a recruiter who put you in touch with the company or made you aware of the companyYou were visiting their website for another reason and saw their Careers pageYou like their company in general and went to their website and Careers page specifically to look for a job opening because youd like to work for themYou saw an advertisement for a job opening (on LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.)You were familiar with the company via previous work (for example, if they were a competitor of yours in a previous job)Those are all really good reasons for how you heard about the job, and can help lead into your explanation of why you applied for the position too. Its a slightly different interview question, but closely-related.So, thats how to answer this question easily and effectively. There are some things you need to avoid doing tooMistakes to Avoid When Answering How Did You Hear About This Position? Now that youve seen some good sample answers fo r how you heard about the job, lets look at what NOT to say. These are all answers you should avoid giving:Dont say youre not sure or dont remember (youll seem scattered or disorganized in your job search which will make it harder to get hired)Dont do anything to make it sound like you are applying for every job you find, like a desperate job seeker who doesnt care what job they get as long as they get hiredDo not tell a lie that could get you caught (like saying you saw them on a job board if youre not sure they posted any jobs on a job board)So the best way to answer How did you hear about the position? is to either tell the truth, or if you cant, use one of the 10 good reasons I mentioned in the previous section (after verifying that it COULD be true). Also, the best answers are concise and to-the-point. So make sure you keep it brief too. If the interviewer wants more info, theyll ask.Id recommend keeping your answer to one or two sentences maximum.Nobodys trying to trip you up or catch you with a mistake when they ask how you heard about the position. Its not a trap. Its just an icebreaker or a way to get the interview started and find out a bit about your job search and how youre looking for jobs. How Did You Hear About the Position? Full Sample Answers:Now lets go through some sample word-for-word answers for how you found out about the position. This will help you get comfortable and get some ideas you can use to create your own answer. Well start with an example for active job seekers, and then Ill give you an example if youre a passive job seeker or are interviewing while you have a job.Sample Answer for Active Job Seekers:Im actively job searching right now, and found your job posting on LinkedIn while searching for Senior Engineer positions. I reviewed the job description on LinkedIn before applying and it seemed like a great potential fit so I wanted to apply and learn more about the opportunity to see if its a good match.Sample Answer for Passive J ob Seekers:I wasnt actively looking for a job change, but a colleague mentioned that she saw you were hiring on your website, and said she had heard good things about your work environment. I went to your website and did some reading on the Careers page and liked what I saw, so I decided I should apply and learnmore about the opportunity. The bottom line is: The best and most impressive job seekers show that theyre being careful in their job search and are looking for the RIGHT job, not just any job.So that should be your goal when you answer, how did you hear about us? show them youre job searching with purpose not just desperately applying everywhere in search of any employer that will take you.Thats not the look employers want! How to Stand Out from Other Job Seekers When AnsweringThe top job seekers focus on going into the interview to learn more about a job, have a conversation, and find out if its a good fit for both sides. Theyre not desperate, and theyre not even sure they wa nt the job. They went to learn about it, ask the interviewer some questions, and then make a decision. If you can do this, youll get more job offers from better employers. Hiring managers love this, and very few people are doing it properly so youll stand out right away. You can do this by having a clear, concise answer for, how did you hear about the position?, by showing confidence and never acting desperate in the interview, and by asking great questions. Here are the best questions to ask recruiters. (Youll often hear interview questions about how you heard about the job in the first interview with a recruiter). If you follow the steps above and read some of the additional resources Ive linked to, youll be on your way to standing out and getting a job offer in your next interview and youll definitely have a great answer for when they ask, how did you hear about this position?UPDATE:Ifyou have interviews coming up and don’t want to leave anything to chance, I’ve created anew gui de where you can copymy exactstep-by-step method for getting job offers. You canget more details here.
